Fitness is extremely important for overall well-being.
If you don’t have at least a minimum level of fitness, it makes day-to-day tasks harder and can negatively impact your overall health.
Unfortunately fitness is so entwined with the weight loss industry that many people have a very negative mind-set around it.
In this mini-series, I would like to explore with you the 5 pillars of body fitness, to help you truly understand what fitness is all about.
What is fitness?
Before we jump into the 5 pillars, let’s talk about fitness for a moment. What is it exactly, or more importantly what is it NOT?
Fitness itself has nothing to do with the way you look.
Google definition of fitness and you will get results like: “The condition of being physically fit and healthy” and “being able to fulfil a particular role or task“
We want the body to be fit and healthy, so that we can do whatever activities we choose to do, when we choose to do them; not so that we can take bikini selfies for Instagram.
What are the 5 pillars of whole body fitness?
In my experience as a personal trainer there are 5 core pillars in order to maintain whole body fitness.
Depending on your stage of life, you may need to work with different levels of intensity and frequency on the different pillars.
For example when you are 75 you probably need to do more balance training than when you are 25, and when you are 80 you will probably lift lighter weights than when you are 40.
Conclusion
Fitness is all about being able to physically do the tasks we want to do.
Whether that is running around with our kids or reaching to get something out of a high cupboard, general day-to-day tasks are much easier when your body has a certain level of fitness.
With this mini-series I will guide you through each pillar in turn, so that you can develop your own Real Life Whole Body Fitness plan.
